Kumara developed during the great West Coast gold rush of 100 years ago when the population peaked at 20,000, prospectors came from far and wide and for a time the town was buzzing boasting an array of businesses to serve the communities needs. Kumara even had it's very own Premier a Richard (King Dick) Seddon who hailed from the north of the UK, he made his home here and was to date the longest serving Prime minister of NZ. However, the gold that was easily accessible at the time came to an end and the town population declined.
Today Kumara is a service village for the rural community of dairy farmers, modern day gold miners, hunters, cyclists of the West Coast Wilderness Trail and tourists, and is definitively in a stage of revitalisation.
You can rest assured your stay with us will be a pleasurable relaxing and above all enjoyable experience, we look forward to giving you a warm welcome.
