Strawberries being nurtured at Strawberry Frames

Do you love strawberries?

If so, Kumara Junction is the place to visit during the summer months. Hecta Williams, owner of Strawberry Frames, grows and sells fresh strawberries in a small roadside shop at the Junction.

Quite a small operation, all the strawberries are sold fresh at the front gate. Picked in the morning, sold by teatime!

This year Hecta is growing 2000 Albion strawberry plants, more than last year, in the hydroponic system she has set up over recent years in her two tunnel houses. This is a new variety for Hecta, although it is popular with other hydroponic growers both for the size of the fruit and for sweetness.

Plants are looking great and first fruit should be available sometime in November. The shop will open every afternoon once the strawberries are being picked, feel free to ring re availability of strawberries or to come up to the house. This year seconds will be sold in packs for smoothies, following a number of enquiries.
